Amazon Ends FBA Prep Services

Amazon Ends FBA Prep Services: What This Means for Your E-commerce Business

Amazon has provided notice of a considerable policy change that will affect thousands of FBA sellers from around the world. The e-commerce giant will stop offering its optional prep and labeling services altogether in relation to Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) shipments in the US marketplace on January 1, 2026.

Diamond Icon What Were Amazon's FBA Prep Services?

Amazon's FBA prep services were optional, fee-based services that aided sellers in the preparation of inventory for storage and shipment. These prep services specifically included product preparation activities such as wrapping fragile merchandise with bubble wrap, bagging products to protect against potential damage, and utilizing protective packaging, ensuring that items survived the fulfillment process.

The services also incorporated item labeling services that applied FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) labels as required on individual products to track and inventory items being stored, packed, and shipped by Amazon. Amazon also provided additional services when necessary such as special requirements for consumable items related to labeling expiration dates and making sure that certain types of product categories were poly-bagged, and bundling similar items into one box.

These prep services were useful for small sellers without warehouse facilities and who could not manage large-scale product preparation internally. These small sellers relied on complete Amazon management for sellers, and its capabilities because Amazon conducted basic quality control inspections as it pertained to particular sellers' products for ensuring their items met Amazon's standards before entering the fulfillment network.

Diamond Icon Why Is Amazon Making This Change?

There seem to be numerous factors at play in Amazon's decision to discontinue prep services. One of the major factors making these manual prep services very costly and time intensive. Amazon ends prepping services, helps to contain operational costs at fulfillment centers and better use their labor to do fulfillment, after all these are services/tasks they cannot provide.

Amazon indicated this discontinuation is intended to "offer faster and more efficient fulfillment center operations" removing its prep activities would help to streamline workflows in the warehouses, and reduce processing times. In addition, Amazon pointed out that "The vast majority of Amazon sellers are now managing their own packaging" as such as the FBA system has matured sellers have more supply chains capabilities.

Finally, Amazon's investment in automation and robotics also no longer fits with these types of services. Automatic functions do not require a human element which reduces speeds of their mechanical processes. Pushing the responsibility of prep actions down to sellers and third party prep companies creates a new competitive marketplace for these activities and allows Amazon to focus on their core brands - logistics and delivery.

Diamond Icon Industry Impact and Seller Concerns

The announcement has ignited considerable conversations in seller communities. Smaller sellers, specifically sellers without their own warehouse space who relied on Amazon's prep services the most, will be the most impacted.

One seller raised the point on Amazon's discussion boards that this may "crush" sellers without warehousing capabilities. This sentiment is a common phrase that appears to be shared among sellers who built their businesses around the all-in-one environment of Amazon and its FBA ecosystem.

Diamond Icon Transition Options for Sellers

Looking elsewhere, Amazon provided sellers with a handful of ways to navigate the transition. Sellers can engage in self-service prep and labeling in-house while following Amazon's preparation guidance and resources. Otherwise, Amazon has vetted a network of FBA prep service providers that sellers could utilize for outsourced prep needs which opens the door for logistics companies to move into this service area.

The Ships in Product Packaging for FBA (SIPP) potentially offers sellers a significant cost management option with eligible products providing prep flexibility and discounts on Amazon FBA fees, possibly offsetting some of the additional prep costs. This program allows properly packaged products to skip certain prep requirements.

Diamond Icon Critical Compliance Requirements

The change in policy comes with strict compliance requirements. Starting January 1, 2026 branded items will need to arrive to an Amazon facility prepped and labeled. Any shipment that arrives with goods not properly prepped will not be eligible for reimbursement should the items become damaged or untraceable. That being said shipments created before January 1st , even those that arrive late, will still be able to be processed with prep service providing a bit of leeway during the transition.

Diamond Icon What This Means for Your Business

For e-commerce sellers using FBA, the new policy means sellers will need to immediately strategize their prep processes. Companies must now evaluate their current prep processes, determine what can be accomplished in-house, and potentially build relationships with third-party prep service providers.

With Amazon cutting out the prep services requirement, the removal of Amazon's prep service also allows for specialized logistics and prep service providers to expand their services and potentially gain market share from independent sellers seeking reliable prep services. Sellers should consider calculating the cost difference between Amazon prep fees versus other alternatives in-house or outsourced, determine to build prep services in house or to outsource it, and evaluate packaging to minimize prep requirements.

Diamond Icon Moving Forward

Sellers have about five months to align their operations prior to January 1, 2026. Your success with this change will rely significantly on planning ahead, careful evaluation of your alternatives, and potentially major operational changes.

The end of FBA prep services is still clearly more than just a policy update. It has a significance in and of itself as Amazon slowly reshapes the seller relationship and expects more sophistication overall from sellers operating on their platform, and legitimizes Amazon's strategy to increase efficiency in its fulfillment network while keeping certain operational aspects with sellers.
